Godspeed Arrives In Henricus; BBVRS Provides EMS

CHESTER, Virginia – May 21, 2007 – The Bensley-Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad provided standby EMS services and staffed a first aid station for the docking of the Godspeed on the weekend of May 19 and 20. This represents a marked departure from the last time the sailing vessel made her way to port at Henricus. Of course, that was on May 24, 1607!

Nearly a dozen volunteers braved the two clear, sunny days, providing ground-based EMS and coordinating transport ambulances from Chesterfield Fire and EMS Stations 1 and 18. Between the requests for service, the volunteers provided walking teams, putting a friendly face on the big white trucks people see on the road.

"We weren't able to make the first landing in 1607," commented Charles Mayle, Transportation Officer for BBVRS. "But we're delighted to provide service to the community in this way, and the chance to help at so special an event is really a delight." Mayle's responsibilities included coordinating staffing with CFEMS personnel, handling on-scene incident command and working with patients.

Henricus presented its annual Publick Days event to coincide with the arrival of the Godspeed. The park atmosphere was vibrant, the grounds filled with interpreters, storytellers, Virginia Indian dance demonstrations, and the sound of seafaring folksongs by local a cappella group The Press Gang. Sunday saw a re-enactment of the John Rolfe and Pocahontas wedding.

Medical requests include a number of bee stings, response for a person overcome by heat and a few other calls consistent with the windy, sunny day.
